Nan°arte Vedere l'Invisibile

Nan°arte Vedere l'Invisibile

"La Nanoarte, nuova disciplina artistica che utilizza il potere delle nanotecnologie per realizzare opere provocatorie e sconvolgenti nella loro invisibilita' all’occhio umano, costituisce del resto la piu' evidente smentita di un pregiudizio ancora diffuso: quello che vede arte e tecnologia come due realta' distanti e non in grado di dialogare tra loro."

Mondo Youtube - CALL + RESPONSE

25-28 April, 2008 CALL + RESPONSE
A series of events hosted by artist Candice Breitz

Creative innovation has always relied, to some extent, on the logic of call-and-response, a phrase that Breitz borrows from musicologists, who use it to describe the interactive quality that is key to musical experience in various oral cultures. Mudam warmly invites you to share your ideas with a group of artists and thinkers as they explore the logic of call-and-response and reflect on strategies of artistic appropriation and creative recycling during a three-day line-up of performances, panels and discussions.

With invited guests Cory Arcangel, Martin Arnold, Pierre Bismuth, Claude Closky, Diedrich Diederichsen, Iain Forsyth + Jane Pollard, Surasi Kusolwong, Matthieu Laurette, Lawrence Lessig, Gabriel Lester, Bjørn Melhus, Momus, Jonathan Monk, Kaz Oshiro, Guillaume Paris, Paul Pfeiffer and James Webb.

Call + Response
Programme

Saturday, 26 April 2008 10am-6pm
Mondo Youtube
This day-long session brings together several artists who have explored the participatory potential of mainstream media such as advertising, the Internet, reality television, video games, MySpace and YouTube. Given the increasingly profit-driven nature of most of these formats, is it possible for a challenging culture of call-and-response to exist within these nascent public spheres, or inevitable that all criticism and innovative thought introduced into these new formats will immediately be instrumentalized towards commercial ends? Invited artists will supplement discussions of their own work with examples of mainstream media that have interested them, influenced them, or into which they have actively intervened.

Dreams

The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality, and the Moving Image
Part I: Dreams

This two-part exhibition features moving-image artworks by a range of influential and emerging international artists whose works use film language and technology to explore the ever-increasing impact of the cinematic on our perceptions and the ways in which the very boundaries between real life and make-believe have become at least blurred, if not indecipherable.

The first, Dreams, addresses films ability to transport us out of our everyday lives and into a dream world. Using a series of artists installations, the exhibition moves us through the different stages of consciousness and dreaming, from those moments between wakefulness and sleep to the darker recesses of the imagination and fantasy. Dreams is curated by chief curator Kerry Brougher and associate curator Kelly Gordon.

At the heart of the second part, Realisms (June 2008), is the irony that in our digital age, in which it has become easier and easier to capture real life in real time, the distinctions between fact and fiction have become increasingly complicated and difficult to decipher. Realisms is curated by curator Anne Ellegood and associate curator Kristen Hileman.

Geoffrey Farmer

Date: April 3, 2008 - June 1, 2008
Location: Witte de With

Witte de With presents the major solo exhibition in Europe of the work of Geoffrey Farmer, following his survey currently on display at Montreal’s Musée d’art contemporain.
Opening Wednesday 2 April, 6 p.m.
7 p.m. Geoffrey Farmer and Gareth Moore in conversation with Jesse Birch

Geoffrey Farmer, I am by nature one and also many, dividing the single me into many, and even opposing them as great and small, light and dark, and in ten thousand other ways (2008)
Photo: Bob Goedewaagen

Geoffrey Farmer creates complex installations that consist of multiple elements distributed throughout the gallery space. These installations activate narratives, which are drawn from diverse sources including social history, popular culture, art history and literature. The exhibition at Witte de With will be a playful experiment that re-explores an existing work titled Airliner Open Studio (2006). It will feature elements of story-telling, writing, performance and process-based sculpture.

Airliner Open Studio is a work structured around a full-scale aircraft cabin, complete with seats, overhead lockers, emergency lighting and cabin windows. Composed of real and false components, this installation transforms the gallery into a stage-set, revealing the influence of the film industry (ever-present in Vancouver) on Farmer’s work, and his fascination with the theatrical: with staging, improvisation, role-play and self-disguise. The artist will use this interior as a rehearsal space, and as a starting point for a number of performances – some scripted, some improvised, alone and with others – performed live in the exhibition space or recorded on video and then presented in the gallery.

Farmer’s preoccupation with the theatrical is also evident in the form adopted by his exhibitions, which enact a real-time staging of change and evolution. Seeking to challenge the apparent timeless neutrality of the gallery and to render the processes of construction visible, he inverts the usual temporality of the exhibition format. Instead of the opening night marking the completion of an installation period, for Farmer it is merely the beginning. He often transforms his installations over the course of an exhibition, working through the night to create changes for visitors to discover each morning, with new elements appearing, others disappearing or being translated into new forms. In this way, his work is “actively worked out in front of the viewer over the duration of the exhibition” (artist’s statement, 2007).

Farmer will be at Witte de With throughout April, making frequent changes to his installation. For this reason, visitors in the first month of the exhibition will be given tickets that allow them to revisit the show, in order to highlight the importance of transformation and process in Farmer’s work.

Curated by: Nicolaus Schafhausen, Zoë Gray.

During the exhibition at Witte de With, other work by Geoffrey Farmer will be on view in Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht, as part of the project Master Humphrey's Clock (12 May - 8 June) by de Appel's Curatorial Training Programme.

Gareth Moore’s solo exhibition also opens on Wednesday April 2 and runs until 4 May.

V2 DAY

La marcia del V2-Day
L’informazione ha i suoi mandanti: ABI, Confindustria, Mediaset, partiti. I magnifici 4. Influenzano l’opinione pubblica. Possiedono le principali televisioni, i giornali più diffusi. Li usano per difendere i loro interessi. I direttori di testata sono loro dipendenti. Li scelgono, li pagano, li licenziano.

Private view of their album-film concept. Created in super 8 and without any treatment, the film clears a hot, contrasting and unique atmosphere.
The music, made of raw sounds mixed with voices, guitars and synthesizers, reinforces this strange ambiance. The spectator finds himself grabbed by small vignettes, as psychedelic as poetic.
An intriguing object you can look at and listen that celebrates the fusion between cinema and music.
